Paint Coverage Estimator Form Template
Calculate how much paint you need before heading to the store — so you buy right the first time.
Buying too little paint means a second trip. Too much means money wasted on unused cans. A paint estimator form gives homeowners and contractors the information to calculate coverage accurately — based on room dimensions, number of coats, and surface type.
The template covers the room dimensions (length, width, ceiling height), the number of doors and windows to subtract, the paint finish type, the number of coats planned, the surface porosity (new drywall vs. painted surface), and any accent walls. The calculation guides the respondent to the recommended quantity.
A quick calculation before the project saves trips, reduces waste, and means the job isn't stopped mid-wall waiting for a second can.
Measure the room perimeter (sum of all wall widths) multiplied by the wall height to get total square footage. Subtract 20 square feet per standard door and 15 per window. Divide by the paint's coverage rate (typically 350-400 sq ft per gallon). Multiply by the number of coats.
Coverage rates are similar, but ceiling surfaces are typically more porous and may require more paint per square foot — especially new drywall or textured ceilings. Add 10 to 15% buffer for ceiling projects.
Add 10% for waste and touch-ups. For custom-mixed colors, order more than you think you need — exact color matching is difficult if you run out mid-project or need touch-ups later.
No. Primer is a separate product with different coverage properties. If you're priming before painting (recommended on new drywall, after significant repairs, or when changing colors dramatically), calculate primer separately.
New drywall and bare wood are porous and absorb more paint. Previously painted surfaces in good condition require less paint. Rough or textured surfaces use more paint than smooth ones. Adjust upward by 15 to 20% for these conditions.
