An unstructured character reference is often too vague to be useful. When a referee writes a few generic sentences about how someone is "hardworking and reliable," it doesn't give you much to work with. Getting specific, considered responses requires guiding referees through the right questions.

A Typeform character reference form asks referees targeted questions about the person they're vouching for — how they know them, how long, specific examples of character traits, and any reservations. One question at a time keeps the referee focused and produces more detailed, useful answers than an open text box. Conditional logic can adjust follow-up questions based on the relationship type or context.

Customize it with the specific character dimensions relevant to your process, whether that's for a job, housing application, volunteer role, or custody matter. Send the link directly to the referee for a fast, hassle-free submission.

Character Reference Form Template FAQs:

A character reference form is a structured questionnaire completed by someone who can speak to an individual's character, behavior, and personal qualities. It's used in employment, housing, volunteer, legal, and other contexts where a personal recommendation is required.

Structured questions produce more useful responses than open-ended reference letters. A form also ensures every referee answers the same questions, making it easier to compare references and identify patterns across multiple responses.

Guide the referee through the key dimensions of character:

  • Name and contact details of the referee
  • Their relationship to the applicant and how long they've known them
  • Description of the applicant's personal qualities and strengths
  • Specific example of the applicant demonstrating a positive characteristic
  • Any concerns or areas for development
  • Overall recommendation and willingness to be contacted for follow-up

Character references are typically provided by people who know the applicant well in a non-professional capacity, such as teachers, community leaders, coaches, or family friends. For professional contexts, some organizations also accept professional acquaintances who can speak to work-related character traits.

Build in a question asking whether the referee has any concerns or reservations about recommending the applicant. If a referee flags significant concerns, that's important information. Treat it as one data point alongside other references and the applicant's own account.
